This Day in History: June 28, 1969
Today is the fortieth anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, a spontaneous fightback against police brutality in New York City that kickstarted the lesbian-gay-transgender movement in the United States.

Yesterday evening, ex-Congressman and professional immigrant-baiter Tom Tancredo came to UNC-Chapel Hill to promote his xenophobic brand of American values. Here is how the students greeted him.

As I was driving to Durham from Baltimore on Sunday, I happened to catch an NPR interview with a Chicago rabbi who’s become a hero of mine, and not just because he’s Michelle Obama’s first cousin.

I’ll admit—I was completely caught by surprise by the huge news out of Iowa today.
This latest headline at CNN is one more example of the ubiquity of domestic violence throughout US society. In yet another story that we’ve heard reported one too many times, a young defense attorney in Louisiana has been found stabbed to death, and now her husband has been charged with her murder.
…I have serious issues with this purported attempt to help the homeless. Why? Take a look at name of this website: PimpThisBum.com:

For many of us in the social justice movement, the idea that a white-collar crook would even spend a minute in jail for his crimes seemed like the impossible dream. But today, two days after Bernard Madoff was ordered into custody until his June 2009 sentencing, we can finally say that the dream is a reality.
In the wake of the national dialogue/debate over the domestic violence charges against Chris Brown, there’s news of yet another well-known singer charged with battering his female partner.
I know: I haven’t written anything here in a long time. Here’s what I’ve been reading during the break:

The near-extinct American Dream
I just came across this article in today’s New York Times. There’s a growing movement of folks across the country that are fighting back against the theft of people’s homes by the big banks. NYT notes the unveiling of ACORN’s new Stop the Foreclosures campaign, which you can find more information about here.
The struggle to stand up to Wall Street for their criminal actions in this whole foreclosure mess is one I fully support. It’s heartening to see everyday people saying “NO!” to the machinations of big business.
A frightening report of abuse out of Ohio:
(CNN) — School administrators in Ohio voted Friday to begin the process of firing a middle school teacher accused of burning a cross into a student’s arm and refusing to keep his religious beliefs out of the classroom.
A middle school student in Ohio says his teacher branded a cross on his arm.
The great State of North Carolina doesn’t pay for the cost of rape kits in hospitals, so hospitals are forced to send the bills to survivors and their insurers (for those who HAVE insurance, that is).
Can someone please explain why this thing was called an “economic stimulus package?” Economic stimulus for whom, I ask you?
